The Canadian Dental Care Plan – What Denture Services Are Covered and What Is Changing?

Dentures can greatly help those who have lost their teeth regain their smile and confidence. However, having access to a new set can be a financial burden for many people in Canada. This is where the Canadian Dental Care Plan (CDCP) comes into play. But how does it work? Does it cover every denture service? In this blog, we are sharing valuable information about the CDCP, exploring what is covered and what may be changing in the future.

Understanding the Canadian Dental Care Plan

The Canadian Dental Care Plan is a federal program designed to make a wide range of dental services more accessible for people in Canada. It provides a dental care subsidy to Canadian residents who have a household income of less than 90,000 a year and who have no other dental benefits.

Who Is Eligible?

Eligibility for the program has expanded since its initial implementation, with more people gaining access over time. Currently, seniors aged 65 or older are eligible, as well as children under 18 and adults with a valid Disability Tax Credit certificate.

Are Denture Services Covered by the CDCP?

Yes! There is a wide range of denture services offered by licensed denturists that are now covered by the CDCP. This includes:

  • Oral Exams

  • Complete Dentures

  • Repairs

  • Tissue Conditioners

  • Regular Relines

  • Regular Rebases

  • Tooth Additions

  • Wire Reinforcements and Clasps

However, some services are either not covered by the CDCP or require pre-authorization from the government. These include:

  • Immediate dentures

  • Partial dentures

  • Soft liners

  • Implant dentures

Are Services Fully Covered by the CDCP?

Many people think that the CDCP will pay for 100% of the cost of the covered services, but this is not always the case. The amount, or percentage, covered will depend on your family income. Here is how it works:

Family Income

Amount Covered by the CDCP

Lower than $70,000

100% of eligible dental and denture services

Between $70,000 and $79,999

60% of eligible dental and denture services

Between $80,000 and $89,999

40% of eligible dental and denture services

Upcoming Changes to the CDCP

As of now, the Canada Dental Care Plan covers some treatment options. However, the plan is being carried out on a phased approach, and more changes are expected to take place in November 2024. It is confirmed that adults of all ages will have access to the CDCP in 2025, provided they meet the eligibility criteria. Additionally, there is a possibility that services currently requiring pre-approval, such as implant dentures and immediate dentures, may be covered in the future.
