NINE TIPS FOR NEW DENTURE WEARERS

dentures

Dentures can boost personal confidence and improve appearance by replacing missing teeth. They can make your face look fuller and sometimes even make you look younger. They can also help you to speak more clearly and eat food properly. Postings Denture Clinics Ltd. is a family-owned and -operated business with an in-house lab, providing a quick turnaround for all dental needs. We understand and appreciate the trust our clients put in us. If you have just received dentures or if you’ve chosen to go through the procedure, it can be awkward at first. In this blog post, we discuss 10 tips for patients who are new to wearing dentures.

1. Maintain a Well-Balanced Diet Select food items that are healthy and easy to chew. Food like eggs, cooked vegetables and yogurt are ideal. Try to take smaller bites than you would normally take; do not get discouraged as chewy foods take more time to eat. 2. Avoid Hard-To-Eat Food Items Certain food items – notably corn and nuts – will be a bit difficult for denture wearers to chew. They might even wind up sticking to your dentures and lead to discomfort. 3. Eliminate Plaque and Bacteria Many respiratory tract illnesses such as asthma are tied to oral bacterial and fungal infections. This makes it crucial to clean your dentures every day. Brush your cheeks, gums and tongue with toothpaste every morning before inserting your dentures. This is also important to eliminate bad breath and gum irritation. 4. Soak Your Dentures Dentures should be soaked daily with a nonabrasive denture cleaner for removing plaque and bacteria from teeth (we have a few different types of denture cleaners in our office – ask us which is right for you). Rinse the dentures thoroughly after soaking and before inserting them. Ensure to never use a denture cleaner in your mouth as it can be harmful. 5. Do Not Use While Sleeping Sleeping without dentures lets the tissues in your mouth heal from any irritation, pressure or soreness that can be caused by wearing them. 6. Keep Talking Some people become adjusted to wearing dentures immediately, but for most people, it can take several weeks. It can be awkward to talk with dentures in the beginning but reading out loud helps. Just focus on letting your tongue get accustomed to operating with dentures. 7. See Your Denturist for Adjustments It’s important for your dentures to fit properly or else you will start to develop sores and experience pain. Always call your denturist and book an adjustment appointment to remedy this (never try and adjust your denture yourself). Sometimes, it may take several visits to get the denture just right – but that is what we are here for! 8. Stay Hydrated Denture wearers experience dry mouth, which can cause gum irritation and increase bacterial growth. Staying hydrated is the best way to avoid this; ensure that you drink at least eight ounces of fluids daily. If dry mouth is a persistent problem, check with your dentist about saliva substitutes and other remedies. 9. Don’t Stop Having Regular Checkups Schedule visits with your dentist on a routine basis to maintain the quality of your dentures. Have your dentist examine your mouth for fungal infections and gum irritations. You can also ask to have your dentures professionally cleaned and discuss your options for maintenance.
